Le terrecotte decorative a Cremona tra XV e XVI secolo. Schedatura e indagini conoscitive per un patrimonio trascurato

Decorative terracottas constitute a vast heritage of great historical, artistic and cultural value for the city of Cremona. Their production saw its greatest diffusion during the 15th and 16th centuries, when thanks to the improvement of techniques it was possible to develop increasingly plastic decorative motifs. The use of clay decorations almost completely stopped with the crisis that struck the city in the seventeenth century; only starting from the nineteenth century, thanks to various factors including the industrialization of production techniques, we will see a recovery in the use of these artifacts. This heritage is currently neglected, therefore actions aimed at protecting it are necessary, starting from knowledge. This thesis aims to create a cognitive tool of this productive tradition, going to catalog the artefacts still present today on the buildings of the city and in museum deposits, thus giving a quantitative dimension to the heritage; studying its history and investigating its production techniques. This research creates the basis for the conservation and enhancement of the assets. For the latter, a proposal for a museum layout is suggested that goes to underline the value of the terracotta decorations and above all of their production.

Le terrecotte decorative costituiscono un vastissimo patrimonio di grande valore storico, artistico e culturale per la città di Cremona. La loro produzione ha visto l’epoca di maggior diffusione durante i secoli XV e XVI, quando grazie al miglioramento delle tecniche fu possibile lo sviluppo di motivi decorativi sempre più plastici. L’uso delle decorazioni fittili s’interruppe pressoché totalmente con la crisi che colpì la città nel Seicento; solo a partire dal XIX secolo, grazie a vari fattori tra cui l’industrializzazione delle tecniche produttive, si vedrà una ripresa nell’impiego di questi manufatti. Questo patrimonio risulta ad oggi trascurato, si rendono quindi necessarie azioni volte alla tutela di esso, partendo dalla conoscenza. Questa tesi si pone l’obbiettivo di creare uno strumento conoscitivo di questa tradizione produttiva, andando a catalogare i manufatti ancora oggi presenti sugli edifici della città e nei depositi museali, dando così una dimensione quantitativa al patrimonio; studiandone la storia ed indagandone le tecniche di produzione. Questa ricerca crea la base per la conservazione e la valorizzazione dei beni. Per quest’ultima si suggerisce una proposta di allestimento museale che vada a sottolineare il valore delle decorazioni in terracotta e soprattutto della loro produzione.
