An urban carpet in Taksim. Regenerating the public space

The study of thesis focuses on regenerating a public area within the urban fabric of Istanbul. The first part of the thesis studies the idea of the public identity of an Islamic city as Istanbul, and to understand the urban situation together with history and the comparisons with other examples. The effects of cultural aspects and history over the public areas are examined in order to create a new definition to the area. The second part of the thesis focuses on site, Taksim, which had an important role in history of the city, as the main water distribution area and later as a military zone. Today, the area is a passage between many different areas. However, it shows a great potential for becoming a focus point of the city. The idea is to use this potential for the public. Furthermore, Taksim is one of the most commonly visited area of Istanbul, without a proper connection with context and citizens, thus the thesis focuses on creating a public identity through the site by introducing public functions and public areas, for the usage of people. The connection between these urban elements is obtained by developing an urban carpet platform that connects the area both horizontally and vertically.

Il presente studio si pone come obiettivo la rigenerazione di uno spazio pubblico all’interno del tessuto urbano di Istanbul. La prima parte del lavoro di tesi analizza l’identità dello spazio pubblico di una città islamica come è nel caso di Istanbul, e cerca di capire la realtà urbana insieme con la storia ed il confronto con altri esempi. Gli effetti degli aspetti culturali e storici che agiscono sugli spazi pubblici vengono esaminati in ordine, in modo da creare una nuova definizione dell’area. La seconda parte della tesi, si concentra sul sito, Taksim, che ha avuto un ruolo importante nella storia della città, dapprima come principale zona di distribuzione dell’acqua, ed in seguito come impianto militare. Oggi, l’area non è che un passaggio tra diversi tipi di spazi; tuttavia, mostra un grande potenziale per diventare un punto focale della città. L’ idea è di usare questo potenziale per il pubblico. Inoltre, Taksim è uno dei luoghi più frequentemente visitati di Istanbul, senza però un’opportuna connessione con il contesto urbano e gli abitanti; per questo la tesi cerca di creare, attraverso il sito, una nuova identità pubblica, introducendo funzioni ed aree pubbliche, per poter essere usate dalle persone. La nuova connessione tra questi elementi è ottenuta attraverso lo sviluppo di un tappeto urbano, una piattaforma che organizza e connette le aree sia orizzontalmente che verticalmente.
