Object, space relationship and myth : design proposal Casinò Municipale di San Pellegrino Terme

The great work of art and architecture is always described as having a specific spirit, feeling, emotion, myth - a work that engages or challenges our beliefs. Moreover, humans throughout history have been trying to understand their surroundings and define nature by putting systems around them. Adding to this point, there were spaces in nature that engaged people’s perception and triggered their emotions. Those spaces are what so called “absolute space”. With no doubt, the discussion of space and its quality cannot be defined without the existence of the object which gives out its physical force. Not to mention that the relation between the object and space is always correlated to our beliefs, and one will dominate the other. Hence, the core of this relationship is what makes the monument exists or not. Basically, the idea of the monument and debate around it was addressed by Superstudio in1972. Additionally, there was a new way introduced to live without the monumental objects and the power associated with them. As a matter of fact, the arrangement of the objects within a space has a significant meaning to the subject forming a monumental or modest event. Eventually, the research highlights the study of the relationship between the object and space and what it manifests from myths and beliefs to be able to design a space that engages people’s emotion and imagination. The Casino Municipal of San Pellegrino Terme is a transformation project, which forms the body of this thesis. The project aims to repurpose the old casino and change it from its current monumental state to a more engaging and attractive place for visitors.

La grande opera d'arte e architettura è sempre descritta come dotata di uno specifico spirito, sentimento, emozione, mito: un'opera che coinvolge o sfida le nostre convinzioni. Inoltre, gli esseri umani nel corso della storia hanno cercato di comprendere ciò che li circonda e definire la natura mettendo dei sistemi intorno a loro. In aggiunta a questo punto, c'erano spazi in natura che coinvolgevano la percezione delle persone e innescavano le loro emozioni. Questi spazi sono il cosiddetto “spazio assoluto”. Senza dubbio, la discussione sullo spazio e sulla sua qualità non può essere definita senza l'esistenza dell'oggetto che emette la sua forza fisica. Senza contare che la relazione tra l'oggetto e lo spazio è sempre correlata alle nostre credenze, e l'una dominerà l'altra. Quindi, il nucleo di questa relazione è ciò che fa esistere o meno il monumento. In sostanza, l'idea del monumento e del dibattito attorno ad esso è stata affrontata dal Superstudio nel 1972. Inoltre, è stato introdotto un nuovo modo di vivere senza gli oggetti monumentali e il potere ad essi associato. In effetti, la disposizione degli oggetti all'interno di uno spazio ha un significato significativo per il soggetto che forma un evento monumentale o modesto. Infine, la ricerca evidenzia lo studio della relazione tra l'oggetto e lo spazio e ciò che manifesta da miti e credenze per poter progettare uno spazio che coinvolga l'emozione e l'immaginazione delle persone. Il Casinò Municipale di San Pellegrino Terme è un progetto di trasformazione, che costituisce il corpo di questa tesi. Il progetto mira a riutilizzare il vecchio casinò e trasformarlo dal suo attuale stato monumentale in un luogo più coinvolgente e attraente per i visitatori.
