In Service Design for Social Innovation, participatory processes are a common practice, as in community engagement projects the use of artistic tools and languages. The artistic field of relational art developed similar practices, with the diffusion of community engagement projects that include non-professionals in the artworks. Even with many apparent commonalities, a comparison of the approaches used in the design and artistic field is missing. This thesis compares the mentioned participatory approaches, answering the following research question: How can relational art contribute to participatory approaches in design for social innovation? Specifically, relational artistic projects could positively influence key success factors for social innovation processes, such as the level of engagement with local communities. Creating a deeper bond before and during a service design project thanks to a relational approach could maximise the desired long-term impact within the community. Through a literature review, the constructs shared by both accounted fields are identified: narratives, encounters, social structures, dissensus and democracy. Then a case studies analysis describes the similarities of the present practices. Finally, 15 semi-structured interviews test on-field the theorized relational approach thanks to the guide and tools developed, triangulated with observations and journaling. The Albugnano Community Map concept concludes the research, describing how the relational approach could be further implemented in the ongoing phases of the project Human Cities SMOTIES - Creative works with small and remote places. The results are encouraging: a theoretical ground and some good practices are identified, while the fieldwork provided rich insights about the relational networks inside the local community, the usage of public places, and the narratives of the community about the area. Community engagement increased in number and diversity, and the relationship between the researcher and locals became solid and welcoming. Further research is needed to confirm the results and test the approach in different stages of the design process and multiple contexts.

Abstract
Further research is needed to confirm the results and test the approach in different stages of the design process and multiple contexts.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
