Nature is an essential element that breathes life into our urban environments. Urban green spaces, including parks, gardens, and urban forests, play a critical role in maintaining the ecological balance and enhancing the overall quality of life in cities. As urbanization continues to reshape our cities, the importance of urban green spaces and their ecological value has become increasingly recognized. This thesis explores the vitality and ecological significance of urban green spaces, shedding light on their multifaceted contributions to the well-being of both humans and the environment and sustainability within urban environments. The study begins by highlighting the significance of athur or the architect Piero Bottoni, the man behind the success of Monte Stella and the history and importance of Monte Stella as an urban green space as well as a vital components of urban ecosystems. It delves into the ecological functions they serve, including the provision of habitat and support for biodiversity, acting as refuges for numerous plant and animal species, which imparts promotion of ecological connectivity, and the mitigation of various environmental challenges. Furthermore, the thesis investigates the natural resources within urban gardens and their potential contributions to sustainable development. It examines a pilot area, where supposed to develop a compost site(https://parcomontestella.it/progetto-2021/). In view of these needs, the idea arose of equipping the Monte Stella Park with its own composting site which, having as input the material resulting from the care of the greenery, could produce compost to be reused in the same park. This innovative idea will allow the Park to start a circular management of its resources, thanks to the reuse of plant material in its place of origin, to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions related to the movement of the material deriving from the care of the greenery and to store in the soils the carbon already fixed by the plants which, in the current state of management, would be lost. Moreover, the thesis explores the social and righteous stories about the “Garden of Righteous” they are aimed at presenting to the public opinion the examples of those who, putting their life, career and friendship at risk, have been able to preserve human values against unjust laws or the indifference of the society. They are places of memory, meeting and dialogue. By emphasizing their role to reserve a symbolic place in the city for remembrance of morally resistant exemplary individuals from all parts of the Earth, the Garden of the Righteous Worldwide was opened in Milan, in the large green area of Monte Stella, in order to honor the Righteous for all the genocides, in 2003. In the final section, the thesis investigates various strategies and approaches to optimize the ecological value and sustainable landscaping practices, and the preservation of existing green spaces. It also explores the importance of public participation and community engagement in the development and maintenance of urban green spaces. Ultimately, this thesis unveils the irreplaceable vitality and ecological significance of urban green spaces in the city of Milan. It emphasizes the need for proactive measures to protect, enhance, and expand these green spaces, recognizing them as essential components of sustainable urban development. By embracing nature’s breath within our urban environments, we can create healthier, more resilient, and harmonious cities for present and future generations.
