The interconnection between supply chain finance solutions and supplier relationship management practices

Purpose, originally and value – The aim of this Thesis work is to create a framework that illustrate how the supply chain finance is interconnected with the supplier relationship management process fulfilling one of the major gap in the existent literature. Design, methodology and approach – The thesis work started from a Systematic Literature Review which led to the identification of research gaps and creation of the Preliminary Research Framework. The latter has been validated and extended through the Case Studies Methodology. 8 semi-structured interviews have been carried out and a Within-Case and Cross-Case Analyses have been performed. Findings – The main outputs of the overall research process include the Final Framework, which identify the kind of relationships between SCF solutions and SRM practices emerged from the analyses; two Sub-Frameworks, one dedicated to Reverse Factoring and one to Confirming, which highlight the integrated connections with SRM practices; a table illustrating the role of power asymmetries in the integration between SCF solutions and SRM practices. Practical and managerial implications – This research can be useful for managers to understand how SCF solutions and the SRM ca be integrated exploiting in full the benefits of SCF adoption. Moreover, the Final Framework provide a deep understanding of the topic to managers and practitioners. Limits and future research – This thesis work’s case studies mainly focus on Italian branches and the sample size is relatively small. Opportunities for future research are found in deeper investigate into the role of technology in the integration of SCF and SRM as the literature recognizes this gap but without establishing a clear relationship between SCF and SRM it was impossible to properly address it. Then, the research is qualitative confining consideration to emerging variables, while quantitative methods could offer more definitive insights. Lastly, due to the evolving nature of the topic, the thesis work requires periodic updates.

Scopo, originalità e valore – Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di creare un quadro che illustra come la SCF sia interconnessa con il processo di gestione delle relazioni con i fornitori, colmando una delle principali lacune nella letteratura esistente. Design, metodologia e approccio – Il lavoro di tesi ha avuto origine da una Revisione Sistematica della Letteratura, che ha permesso di individuare lacune di ricerca e di creare il Preliminary Research Framework che è stato poi validato ed ampliato attraverso l'adozione della Metodologia Case Studies. Sono state condotte 8 interviste semi-strutturate e sono state eseguite analisi Within-Case e Cross-Case. Risultati – I risultati principali della Tesi includono il Final Framework, che identifica il tipo di relazioni tra le soluzioni SCF e le pratiche SRM emerse dall'analisi, due Sub-Frameworks, uno dedicato al Reverse Factoring e uno al Confirming, che evidenziano le interconnessioni con le pratiche di SRM siano integrate e una tabella che mostra il ruolo delle asimmetrie di potere nell’integrazione tra le soluzioni SCF e pratiche SRM. Implicazioni manageriali e pratiche – Questa ricerca può aiutare i manager al fine di comprendere come le soluzioni di SCF e il SRM possano essere integrate per massimizzarne i benefici. Inoltre, il Final Framework fornisce una visione completa. Limiti e ricerche future – La Tesi si focalizza principalmente su casi studio relativi a filiali italiane, con un campione limitato. Ricerche future potrebbero esaminare il ruolo della tecnologia nell'integrazione di SCF e SRM. La letteratura riconosce questa lacuna, ma l'assenza di una chiara relazione tra SCF e SRM ne aveva impedito lo studio. Inoltre, la ricerca si basa su un approccio qualitativo, ma l'utilizzo di metodi quantitativi potrebbe portare a risultati più definiti. Infine, data la natura in evoluzione dell'argomento, questa ricerca necessiterà di aggiornamenti periodici.
