Urban factories in practice: a multiple case study on Milan Fab Labs

Our thesis is a study revolving around the concept of urban factories (UF), that are production entities located in an urban environment. It starts with a literature review, through which UF’s main characteristics are identified. Then, a correlation is shown between UF and Fab Labs. To target the literature gaps found, the main questions addressed are about how the UF phenomenon has developed in practice, its current state, and possible future scenarios. In order to answer them, a cross-case analysis was put in place, involving four Fab Labs in the city of Milan. Interviews were conducted, transcribed, and codified in an interpretative framework we built starting from the literature. Thanks to this analysis, we discovered that many concepts present in literature are already in place. However, some were not even mentioned by the interviewees.

La nostra tesi è uno studio che verte sul concetto di urban factories (UF), ovvero entità produttive situate in un ambiente urbano. Inizia con una panoramica della letteratura, attraverso la quale vengono identificate le caratteristiche principali delle UF. Successivamente, viene mostrata una correlazione tra UF e Fab Lab. Per colmare le lacune della letteratura, le principali domande affrontate riguardano il modo in cui il fenomeno delle UF si è sviluppato nella pratica, il suo stato attuale e i possibili scenari futuri. Per rispondere a queste domande, è stata condotta una cross-case analysis che ha coinvolto quattro Fab Lab della città di Milano. Le interviste sono state condotte, trascritte e codificate in un framework interpretativo costruito a partire dalla letteratura. Grazie a questa analisi, abbiamo scoperto che molti concetti presenti in letteratura sono già in atto. Tuttavia, alcuni non sono stati nemmeno menzionati dagli intervistati.
