The Galapagos archipelago is one of the best-preserved protected natural ecosystems on the planet. It is recognized worldwide as a prime tourist destination and touted as an oasis of pristine nature. Due to its volcanic geology and isolated geographic location in the Pacific Ocean, it has very specific environments that have made it home to very special species that exist only in this area, so much so that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the Galapagos archipelago is also home to more than 30,000 permanent inhabitants and receives more than 275,000 tourists a year. Its various human settlements have followed a process of urbanization that has been mostly ignored in conservation planning and management. Despite being considered one of the most studied territories in the world, the study of Galapagos architecture and urbanism has been relegated, for the most part, to informative surveys of existing infrastructure. Because of the belief that the community is harmful to the environment, human settlements have been excluded from the protection policy that applies to most of the territory. This has led to a neglected urban space that fits in the middle of the protected space, generating conflicts between both spatial definitions. Nevertheless, the shape of the city had to respond to the physical geography of the archipelago, which defined the location and shape of urban areas and agricultural land. This thesis analyzes the legislative and geographic constraints of the Santa Cruz port area in order to redevelop and make the protected area of Bahía de la Academia and Laguna de las Ninfas, in the vicinity of the town, usable by the inhabitants.

Abstract
This thesis analyzes the legislative and geographic constraints of the Santa Cruz port area in order to redevelop and make the protected area of Bahía de la Academia and Laguna de las Ninfas, in the vicinity of the town, usable by the inhabitants.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
