The notion of heritage has massively evolved throughout the XXth century, by virtue of social and cultural changes as well as the advancement of critical heritage studies, that have reviewed and expanded the traditional understanding of cultural values. Within this path, the concept of difficult heritage has emerged, hence triggering the interest in buildings and sites with controversial histories and the experimentation with their adaptation to new uses, capable of contextualizing them in the present-day contexts and, at the same time, of conserving and enhancing their identity. In particular, the thesis explores the way former prisons have become a significant chapter of heritage studies, how the tangible and intangible values embedded in their past – and especially in their architecture – have been the object of evolving considerations and agendas, and how their transformation has been managed in the last decades. By combing the exploration of existing literature and the investigation of paradigmatic case studies, the research work led to the development of a theoretical framework and to its verification through the application in a specific site, the case of Ankara Ulucanlar Prison in Turkey, which was turned into a prison museum in 2011. The critical observation of the case study offered the opportunity to validate the consistency of the established framework and to reflect on the possible updates of existing museums through a research-by-design application, focused on the enhancement of the problematic parts of Ulucanlar Prison Museum’s program.

Abstract
The critical observation of the case study offered the opportunity to validate the consistency of the established framework and to reflect on the possible updates of existing museums through a research-by-design application, focused on the enhancement of the problematic parts of Ulucanlar Prison Museum’s program.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
