The COVID-19 crisis has affected our everyday life thoroughly. Public health issues, including both physical and mental health of individuals, have received increasingly attention of many countries after the pandemic. Urban streets, as the most important part of public spaces, have become an integral part of our public health infrastructure, because of their various functions and activities that closely related to our daily life. As a result, it requires the reallocation of public spaces on the streets in response to the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The literature review firstly gives a brief definition of post-pandemic era, urban street space, and public health based on prior studies. And then demonstrates the challenges of public health during the pandemic, and how have this health crisis changed our cities. It delves into the profound impact of the pandemic on urban environments, highlighting vulnerabilities and the renewed emphasis on public health in urban planning. Also, it charts the historical evolution of urban street spaces and some typical street design guidelines in different regions, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping cities and fostering communities connections, as well as providing some inspiration for further research. Then, this study concludes that our city needs to be redefined, and urban street spaces need to be rethought when it comes to post-pandemic era. After comparing several response measures and strategies for urban streets in different regions worldwide during and after the pandemic, this thesis chooses the case of the 34th Avenue Open Street in New York, the United States, and adopts qualitative research methods to conduct an in-depth exploration and analysis, because of its highly correlated to the research questions and the unique characteristics within the context of post-pandemic era. The challenges and problems of this case are firstly analyzed, taking the background of COVID-19 into consideration; then focuses on specific solutions and strategies of this case, mainly including its two-stage plans, implementation strategies, design considerations and design proposal; finally, to summarizes the benefits of this case on public health, public safety, environment, and economic recovery of the city. Ultimately, this research contributes to the understanding of how urban street spaces can be reimagined and renewed in the post-pandemic era to prioritize public health and well-being. It provides strategies of converting street space in post-pandemic era from the perspective of promoting public health, mainly focus on three key points: inclusivity, greenery, and safety. The final aim is to provide valuable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and researchers seeking evidence-based solutions to create healthier, more resilient, and socially inclusive cities.
