CIRCULAR ECONOMY. Design and Application in Products of Use, Focused on Furniture Design.

This Thesis is addressing the “circular materials” defining it as resources or materials that are reused, repaired, refurbished, or recycled in a closed-loop system, rather than being discarded as waste. The Thesis covers different aplications regarding design, but it mainly focuses in furniture and describes how these “circular materials” can play a significant role in reducing the environmental impact of products, promoting sustainability practices. It’s important to highlight that making use of these “circular materials”, in addition of reducing waste, it also enhances the durability, performance, and aesthetic qualities of new proposed products. The investigation provides an overview of “circular materials” and their design and application in products of use, mainly in furniture design. It discusses various design strategies and technologies used to create products using “circular materials” and highlights their benefits and challenges. By presenting examples of successful case studies and products that have incorporated “circular materials” in their design, this Thesis concludes developing practical, well- structured and easily understandable set of guidelines and recommendations based on research and analysis, demonstrating the potential use of this “circular materials” to drive positive environmental changes, specific actions and decision- making processes.

Questa tesi affronta il tema dei "materiali circolari", definendoli come risorse o materiali che vengono riutilizzati, riparati, ristrutturati o riciclati in un sistema a ciclo chiuso, anziché essere scartati come rifiuti. La tesi copre diverse applicazioni del design, ma si concentra principalmente sull'arredamento e descrive come questi "materiali circolari" possano svolgere un ruolo significativo nella riduzione dell'impatto ambientale dei prodotti, promuovendo pratiche di sostenibilità. È importante sottolineare che l'uso di questi "materiali circolari", oltre a ridurre i rifiuti, migliora anche la durata, le prestazioni e le qualità estetiche dei nuovi prodotti proposti. Questa indagine fornisce una panoramica sui "materiali circolari" e sulla loro progettazione e applicazione nei prodotti d'uso, principalmente nel design dei mobili. Discute le varie strategie di progettazione e le tecnologie utilizzate per creare prodotti con "materiali circolari" e ne evidenzia i vantaggi e le sfide. Presentando esempi di casi di studio e prodotti di successo che hanno incorporato i "materiali circolari" nel loro design, questa tesi conclude lo sviluppo di una serie di linee guida e raccomandazioni pratiche, ben strutturate e facilmente comprensibili, basate sulla ricerca e sull'analisi, che dimostrano il potenziale uso di questi "materiali circolari" per guidare cambiamenti ambientali positivi, azioni specifiche e processi decisionali.
