Former Santa Corona Hospital : proposal for the reuse of the former sanatorium in Garbagnate Milanese

The former Santa Corona hospital, built in 1923, is situated in Garbagnate Milanese’s Groane pine forest. Its history may be broken down into three distinct phases starting with its founding in the 1950s, when it operated as a cutting-edge anti-tuberculosis sanatorium to combat the epidemic that ravaged Milan in the middle of the nineteenth century. The second period began after its opening in the 1950s. The conclusion of the infectious crisis and the subsequent overthrow of the sanitariums mark the beginning of the second phase. The task of converting the building to serve as the general hospital it is now is then commenced. The final phrase begins in 2015 when the hospital’s operations are transferred to a new building in the Lombardy Region next to the existing complex. The conclusion of the thesis consists of a proposal for the conversion of part of the spaces into a new educational facility which is a formal school in Garbagnate Milanese. The premise for this project is extensive historical research work to reconstruct the original appearance of the work and understand the reasons for very particular architectural choices. The foundation of this project is a thorough historical investigation to recreate the structure’s original look and comprehend the rationale behind certain extremely specific architectural decisions. In addition, the urban conditions and the complex’s conservation status were investigated, and added new proposal to the existing complex for a part of a new formal school. The proposal of the existing structure is added based on the architectural composition movement that is explained in the case studies.

L’ex ospedale Santa Corona, costruito nel 1923, è situato nella pineta delle Groane di Garbagnate Milanese. La sua storia può essere suddivisa in tre fasi distinte a partire dalla sua fondazione negli anni ‘50, quando operò come sanatorio antitubercolare all’avanguardia per combattere l’epidemia che devastava Milano a metà dell’Ottocento. Il secondo periodo iniziò dopo la sua apertura negli anni ‘50. La conclusione della crisi infettiva e il successivo rovesciamento dei sanatori segnano l’inizio della seconda fase. Viene quindi avviato il compito di convertire l’edificio per fungere da ospedale generale. L’ultima frase inizia nel 2015 quando l’attività dell’ospedale viene trasferita in un nuovo edificio in Regione Lombardia accanto al complesso esistente. La conclusione della tesi consiste in una proposta per la riconversione di parte degli spazi in una nuova struttura educativa che sia una scuola formale a Garbagnate Milanese. Premessa a questo progetto è un ampio lavoro di ricerca storica per ricostruire l’aspetto originario dell’opera e comprendere le ragioni di scelte architettoniche molto particolari. Alla base di questo progetto c’è un’indagine storica approfondita per ricreare l’aspetto originale della struttura e comprendere la logica dietro alcune scelte architettoniche estremamente specifiche. Inoltre, sono state analizzate le condizioni urbane e lo stato di conservazione del complesso e è stata aggiunta una nuova proposta al complesso esistente per una parte di una nuova scuola formale. La proposta della struttura esistente viene aggiunta in base al movimento compositivo architettonico spiegato nei casi di studio.
