District heating systems have emerged as a key component of sustainable urban energy infrastructure, offering the potential to enhance energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote the integration of renewable energy sources. To harness these benefits, the design and operation of district heating systems must be optimized according to multiple, often conflicting, objectives. This paper presents a model of Multi-Objective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) for the optimization of energy systems using the ε-constraint method to generate a set of Pareto optimal solutions. The objectives are the minimization of total cost and carbon emissions. The model was applied to a case study consisting of a residential district in the city of Milan and to several design scenarios (restrictions on available technologies). The results show that it is possible to achieve greater emissions reductions if more technologies, especially renewable ones, are available. Furthermore, it is evident how the emission factor of the electrical grid mainly affects the design of technologies such as heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. Finally, it is evident that it is possible to achieve a 40% reduction in emissions compared to the current district heating design but with an increase in costs.

Abstract
Finally, it is evident that it is possible to achieve a 40% reduction in emissions compared to the current district heating design but with an increase in costs.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
