Cities and railways have coexisted for two centuries with railroads making a significant contribution to urban development in the 19th century. But as these railways lost importance over time, they left behind large, strategic sites that pose challenges and opportunities for cities. To take advantage of these potential development sites, various projects have been proposed throughout the past years around the world. The Scalo Farini project in Milan which is aimed at transforming former railyards stands as one of these urban regeneration initiatives. The masterplan proposal by OMA was chosen between 5 finalist projects as a result of a competition. Despite the fact that the winning masterplan took into account numerous critical factors and was refined through public feedback, it encountered a series of challenges. This study concentrates on analysing the difficulties associated with public spaces in OMA’s masterplan and offering improvement strategies towards elevating the quality of public spaces in terms of connectivity, usability, functionality and sustainability in Scalo Farini. As a result of the thesis project a final masterplan layout with implemented improvements including urban design proposals based on specific case studies and in-detail viusalisations of public spaces is proposed. The Scalo Farini project in Milan, aimed at transforming the former railway yards, stands as one of these urban regeneration initiatives.
