Rewriting Mosul old city : the reconstruction of the historic riverfront along the Tigris river

In the sixth century, Mosul was founded on the western bank of the Tigris River, next to the ruins of the ancient Assyrian capital of Nineveh. The city was affluent in the past and established itself as the hub of the Islamic world; as a result, it has a wealth of historical artifacts and cultural treasures. However, from 2014 to 2017, the civil war between the Iraqi government and the Islamic State terrorist group had a significant impact. on Mosul. On the western bank of the Tigris River, close to the ruins of the former Assyrian capital of Nineveh, Mosul was established in the sixth century. The city once enjoyed prosperity and became the center of the Islamic world; as a result, it is home to an abundance of historical antiques and cultural treasures. However, Mosul was significantly impacted by the civil conflict between the Iraqi government and the Islamic State terrorist organization from 2014 to 2017. Our thesis study aims to employ the rewriting technique, involving permanence, traces, absences, etc. in the design process so that new constructions can recall some constants and aspects of the preceding settlement. We focus on reviving the absence or presence of city walls, monumental structures, and urban infrastructures and use those traces and permanent ties to improve accessibility, develop space quality, and enrich the functions on riverbanks, deeply to show the new modern city atmosphere with a new look while also reflecting the history and spirit of the site.
