Organizational purpose is a fundamental concept that has gained increasing attention in both academic and practical contexts. A clear and meaningful purpose can contribute to an organization's success, providing improved leadership effectiveness, organizational performance, reputation, authenticity, and identity development. However, many streams of research have stressed the underlying ambiguity of this concept. Scholarly research in this area is still limited, with particular regard to the conceptualization of organizational purpose, leading to a lack of clarity, multiple interpretations, and misunderstandings of the concept. This work provides a valuable contribution to the field by offering a comprehensive definition of organizational purpose, supported by empirical evidence. The empirical research was conducted on the basis of the grounded theory research methodology, undertaking a thematic analysis of the multifaceted nature of organizational purpose to identify the definitional core categories (i.e., Purpose domains) that emerged from interviews with managers, consultants and experts. The identified purpose domains presented in this thesis (Sustainability, Leadership and direction, Motivation and individual well-being, Ontological domain, Ethical domain, Performance enhancer, and Human dimension) provide on the one hand insights into the underlying values, beliefs, and motivations that guide organizational purpose, informing the development of effective strategies for promoting purpose-driven organizations, and on the other, a definition of organizational purpose able to bring clarity to the concept. Additionally, this work proposes an innovative theoretical framework, providing scholars with a supplementary tool to advance research on organizational purpose, and, on the practical side, offering a measurable standard for the evaluation of purposeful organizations.

Abstract
Additionally, this work proposes an innovative theoretical framework, providing scholars with a supplementary tool to advance research on organizational purpose, and, on the practical side, offering a measurable standard for the evaluation of purposeful organizations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
