University business incubator model : the synergy of theory and practice

Business incubators play a significant role in developing an entrepreneurial ecosystem by supporting attempts of new ideas to become sustainable business units. A growing body of evidence suggests University Business Incubators are one type of such organization and, in the lens of the "third mission" of high education, contribute to the growing qualitative employment rate and quantity of innovative start-ups. Previous research has indicated potential associations between UBIs and organizational studies investigating models of running innovation-supporting businesses. However, the historiography of UBIs largely ignores the role of exploring these organizations from business model perspectives that could contribute to the incubation theory and provide practitioners with more insights in this field. This thesis seeks to understand and explore the trends in the UBI literature on the research agenda and develop the model of UBIs from the BMC and the Input - Process - Output perspectives. This manuscript includes a systematic literature review and case studies. This systematic literature review is based on the papers from the most credible sources of the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Regarding case studies, interviews of representatives from leading UBIs formed the basis and shed light on some aspects of the incubations process from their business model perspective. The thesis concludes that the research agenda of the UBI is developing, and the interest of management scholars is increasing. Thematic analysis of the literature formed the main topics around which the inquiry is going, and based on these topics, the corresponding conceptual framework is proposed. The framework prompted an idea to develop the UBI model using data from interviews mentioned earlier. Therefore, other results are the UBI models and recommendations to researchers and practitioners that are first, to our knowledge, proposed in such a manner, and the author believes that it contributes to the incubation theory.

Gli incubatori di imprese svolgono un ruolo significativo nello sviluppo di un ecosistema imprenditoriale sostenendo i tentativi di nuove idee di diventare unità aziendali sostenibili. Un numero crescente di prove suggerisce che gli incubatori d’impresa universitari sono un tipo di organizzazione di questo tipo e, nell’ottica della “terza missione” dell’istruzione superiore, contribuiscono al crescente tasso di occupazione qualitativa e alla quantità di start-up innovative. Precedenti ricerche hanno indicato potenziali associazioni tra UBI e studi organizzativi che indagano i modelli di gestione delle imprese a sostegno dell’innovazione. Tuttavia, la storiografia degli UBI ignora in gran parte il ruolo dell’esplorazione di queste organizzazioni dal punto di vista del modello di business che potrebbe contribuire alla teoria dell’incubazione e fornire ai professionisti maggiori approfondimenti in questo campo. Questa tesi cerca di comprendere ed esplorare le tendenze nella letteratura UBI sull'agenda di ricerca e sviluppare il modello di UBI dal BMC e dalle prospettive Input - Processo - Output. Questo manoscritto include una revisione sistematica della letteratura e studi di casi. Questa revisione sistematica della letteratura si basa sugli articoli provenienti dalle fonti più credibili dei database Scopus e Web of Science. Per quanto riguarda i casi di studio, le interviste ai rappresentanti dei principali UBI hanno costituito la base e hanno fatto luce su alcuni aspetti del processo di incubazione dal punto di vista del loro modello di business. La tesi conclude che l’agenda di ricerca dell’UBI si sta sviluppando e l’interesse degli studiosi di management è in aumento. L'analisi tematica della letteratura ha costituito gli argomenti principali attorno ai quali si sta svolgendo l'indagine e, sulla base di questi argomenti, viene proposto il quadro concettuale corrispondente. Il quadro ha suggerito l’idea di sviluppare il modello UBI utilizzando i dati delle interviste menzionate in precedenza. Pertanto, altri risultati sono i modelli UBI e le raccomandazioni a ricercatori e professionisti che sono i primi, a nostra conoscenza, proposti in questo modo, e l'autore ritiene che contribuiscano alla teoria dell'incubazione.
