Assessing the Quality of Urban Life QoUL in Urban Districts Case study: Johannes and Madlaforen/Sandal 2 in Stavanger Norway

This thesis aims to assess the Quality of Urban Life (QoUL) in two specific neighborhoods, Madlaforen/Sandal 2, and Johannes, situated in Stavanger, Norway. To gather data on residents’ perceptions and subjective factors of QoUL, a structured questionnaire employing a 5-point Likert scale was administered. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate emotions on four key dimensions: pleasantness, unpleasantness, activation, and deactivation. The main objective of the study is to investigate the influence of the two neighborhoods to the overall QoUL, with particular emphasis on factors such as place bonding, emotional appraisal, and general well-being. Furthermore, the research explores the differences in wellness and emotional reactions between residents of Johannes, characterized by a higher immigrant population, and Madlaforen/Sandal 2, characterized by a higher proportion of local residents. The findings highlight that both neighborhoods foster a strong sense of place bonding and community, significantly enhancing the well-being and social cohesion of their residents. Notably, Madlaforen/Sandal 2 exhibits higher levels of emotional appraisal and overall well-being in comparison to Johannes. These outcomes provide valuable insights into the demographic characteristics and relationship, prevalent of citizens in the two neighborhoods of Stavanger, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of QoUL dynamics.

Questa tesi mira a valutare la qualità della vita urbana (QOUL) in due quartieri specifici, Madlaforen/Sandal 2 e Johannes, situati a Stavanger, in Norvegia. Per raccogliere dati sulle percezioni dei residenti e sui fattori soggettivi di QOUL, è stato somministrato un questionario strutturato che utilizza una scala Likert a 5 punti. Il questionario è stato progettato per valutare le emozioni su quattro dimensioni chiave: piacevolezza, spiacevolezza, attivazione e disattivazione. L'obbiettivo principale dello studio è indagare ’influenza dei due quartieri rispetto alla QoUL complessiva, con particolare enfasi su fattori come il legame con il luogo, la valutazione emotiva e il benessere generale. Inoltre, la ricerca esplora le differenze del benessere e delle reazioni emotive tra i residenti di Johannes, caratterizzati da una maggiore popolazione immigrata, e Madlaforen/Sandal 2, caratterizzati da una percentuale maggiore di residenti locali. I risultati evidenziano che entrambi i quartieri promuovono un forte senso di legame con il luogo e con la comunità, migliorando in modo significativo il benessere e la coesione sociale dei loro residenti. In particolare, Madlaforen/Sandal 2 mostra livelli più elevati di valutazione emotiva e benessere generale rispetto a Johannes. Questi risultati forniscono preziose informazioni sulle caratteristiche demografiche e la relazione , prevalent dei cittadini nei due quartieri di Stavanger, contribuendo così a una comprensione più completa delle dinamiche QoUL.
