Financial valuation of automotive companies

The automotive industry is a wide sector that has such as historical importance and provides one of the most used mobility types. Inside such a big sector, there are a lot of innovations and technologies being adopted such as the vehicle´s electrification and automatization. These new trends in the sector promoted the insurgence of new companies and the changing of many incumbent companies. The companies analyzed are big players in the that are focused worldwide and in some of the main automotive markets such as USA and China. Based on these factors, the thesis will focus on some the 3 representative automotive firms: GM, Tesla and SAIC. In order to evaluate how these companies perform financially and understand if there is any market overvaluation, this thesis applies financial valuation method such as Discounted Cash Flows and relative valuation. Then, comparing the enterprise values obtained with the market value, it will give a better understanding on how the companies exploit the new technology trends to generate value and how the market perceives it on the final value.

L'industria automobilistica è un settore vasto che ha tale importanza storica e fornisce uno dei tipi di mobilità più utilizzati. All'interno di un settore così grande, ci sono molte innovazioni e tecnologie adottate come l'elettrificazione e l'automatizzazione del veicolo. Queste nuove tendenze nel settore hanno favorito l'insorgenza di nuove imprese e il mutamento di molte imprese già esistenti. Le aziende analizzate sono grandi player del settore che si concentrano a livello mondiale e in alcuni dei principali mercati automobilistici come USA e Cina. Sulla base di questi fattori, la tesi si concentrerà su alcune delle 3 aziende automobilistiche rappresentative: GM, Tesla e SAIC. Al fine di valutare come queste società si comportano finanziariamente e capire se c'è una sopravvalutazione del mercato, questa tesi applica il metodo di valutazione finanziaria come i flussi di cassa scontati e la valutazione relativa. Quindi, confrontando i valori d'impresa ottenuti con il valore di mercato, si capirà meglio come le aziende sfruttano i nuovi trend tecnologici per generare valore e come il mercato lo percepisce sul valore finale.
