Abstract
When, with the development of technology, living in caves became a choice, places where we could settle multiplied. Attracting us with natural resources, while descending from the mountains 60 km south of the urbanized city of Rome, the land of Agro Pontino has been carefully inhabited since ancient times. The ground, not always kept firm by the vegetation that densely grows, and the water arriving from the East and swamping the area in an attempt to reach the Mediterranean Sea, compose a landscape where civil engineering works have been carried out since Roman times attempting to manage the push of nature. As we transition through the site, we see a gradual layering of landscapes. A thin strip of land separates the lake of Fogliano from the sea, focusing on the only settlement at the shore that has arrived to our days. We are going to explore the physical and historical traces together with a speculative method to extract a sense of what the place could have been, was, and is. Fishermen and farmers would live in ephemeral constructions under the governance, first of the church and then of the influential family of the Caetani, leaving testimonies of a way of life now swallowed by the city. Today, the village of Fogliano is the favorite destination for citizens from Latina and the surroundings as a leisure area. The thesis proposes a new intervention that builds upon a pre-existing building, called “procoio”, the circular structure used for smoking fishes . The project proposes a pavillion building design throughout the combined process of “gemination” and hidden geometry. The design proposal aims at bringing together the proportions between the spaces of the village: the lawn, the villa, the dock and the park.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
