In Castelsantangelo sul Nera, the relationship between the identity of the place and its landscape is a fundamental theme. The economy of this region has always been based on activities that guarantee the preservation and active governance of the territory, in a relationship so strong that it has shaped the landscape according to its needs. Shepherds and farmers, through grazing, transhumance and the production of local foodstuffs, and charcoal burners, through the cutting of the wood for firewood and charcoal production, have contributed to creating the landscape and ecosystem complexity present and protected today by the Monti Sibillini National Park. The phenomenon of rural abandonment, also present in Castelsantangelo and amplified by the seismic events of 2016, and the consequent and imminent extinction of ancient trades is, however, putting this system of vital relations between communities and their territory into crisis. Consequently, rapid changes are leading to the loss of landscape diversity and richness. This, well represented by the progressive advance of forests over grasslands and abandoned fields, can become an opportunity for economic, and above all social, rebirth for the communities of a region that today seem destined to disappear. Rediscovering the relationship with the area’s forests, with a view to multi-functionality and according to a more sustainable approach than in the past, can bring production back to the centre of the local economy. In fact, the creation of a woodworking hub, as a vital link between the forests and the production of finished products, would allow Castelsantangelo to be included in the Marche’s woodworking supply chain. By reconverting some temporary structures for the headquarters of the municipal offices, built after the earthquake, the activity would guarantee employment and the generation of a demand for wood, which would lead back to the protection and care of the forest system of the Sibillini Mountains, thus decreasing the various territorial risks and ensuring the growth and development of the communities.

Abstract
By reconverting some temporary structures for the headquarters of the municipal offices, built after the earthquake, the activity would guarantee employment and the generation of a demand for wood, which would lead back to the protection and care of the forest system of the Sibillini Mountains, thus decreasing the various territorial risks and ensuring the growth and development of the communities.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
