Implementation of lean initiatives : the Kimberly Clark S.r.l case

This study aims to analyze the implementation of lean initiatives in a plant that produces paper-based products. Those initiatives are part of a broader project of the global company to transform it from a mass production to a lean manufacturing corporation. That change is happening by steps and this study followed the initial stage in one of the mills. Many lean tools are approached in the work with special emphasis on the five S, visual management control and kanban. The lean system can generate many qualitative and quantitative gains that will be presented during the work. Nonetheless, the difficulties faced are also mentioned and the possible countermeasures discussed. This work especially demonstrates the importance of considering the human aspects in those types of projects; the commitment of workers can be critical for the success of the change. Finally, this study’s objective is to present the specific characteristics of this case and the implications of it.
