This architectural thesis project focuses on the design of a harmonious Eco-Village in the town of Papades in Evia, Greece, following the unfortunate wildfires of the year 2021. The design does not only aim to create a sustainable and environmentally conscious community settled within the woods of this beautiful mountainous terrain, but also focuses on achieving a place and a structure of climate resilience and climate change adaptation. Rebuilding on this land that was once, before the wildfires, a lush forest village settlement, is an opportunity to now create a highly innovative eco-habitat that raises awareness on green actions of living and building conditions. On top of that, this is a chance to showcase the potentiality of the local natural materials of Papades and preserve the traditions of the place. “An Eco-Village is an intentional community of people in free association, without constriction or top-down imposition, with the intention to create a settlement based on self-sufficiency, limited ecological impact, based on sustainability largely intended.” Its purpose is to foster environmentally concsious living, circular economy, social and environmental unity and respect. Its role is crucial in raising awareness on global challenges, by displaying sustainable living implementations and preserving natural resources. In addition, they contribute to a more eco-friendly and resilient lifestyle of freedom and justice for the present and future generations. In the case of Greece, a country with mediterranean climate and fully diverse landscape, where nowadays is often threatened by plenty of sudden extreme events like flooding and wildfires, this project acts as a beam of hope for better days. There is a high demand of innovative eco-solutions in such place, and therefore, an eco-settlement can, without a doubt, be one of them. The village of Papades in Northern Evia, Greece, is a mountainous place with the view of the Aegean Sea and with access to natural water resources, making it a unique location of choice for an eco-vilage project. Its historical importance and closeness to nature are also a few more reasons why this place is an ideal choice, especially due to the need of landscape regeneration after the wildfires of 2021. This eco-village plays an important role to the people and to this landscape, serving as a beam of positivity, hope and resilience, creating a harmonious relationship between people and the natural environment.
