This thesis aims to develop a strategic communication system to promote Traditional Martial Arts in an inclusive way in a modern and highly competitive context, with a specific focus on Chinese Kung Fu. The project stems from a personal passion born in October 2014 when I began practicing Traditional Chang-style Kung-Fu and was filled with wonder. After years of practice, and after becoming an instructor with the possibility of opening my own school in the future, I began to look around with more awareness and attention. The result was alarming: I realized there was a lack of schools, masters, students and training partners. Passionate about a very ancient martial art now declining, I then decided to use my skills as a Communication Designer by investigating this problem, with the aim of proposing an applicable solution to it. In the research process, I began investigating the situation of Kung-Fu and traditional martial arts schools in Italy and Europe. Starting by investigating basic concepts about Kung-Fu and its current condition through desk research, I detected a lack of bibliography on the topic, especially up-to-date material. I then met this shortage by analyzing, through case studies, the communication strategies adopted by successful influencers and schools and the role of social media in their visibility, adding an in-depth look to the dynamics of social media, cross-media and storytelling. Several critical issues emerged from the research. Traditional Kung-Fu schools tend to reject communication by interpreting it as an act of selling out their intrinsic value. Fewer and fewer people have awareness on the subject and even fewer decide to embark on a path that is perceived as difficult and not very inclusive, particularly if we consider more adult and/or female targets. Therefore, it became necessary to raise awareness among school Masters about the importance of communication and to find a way to provide them with the right tools to produce quality content to promote their schools. The most effective way to provide such tools turned out to be a Strategic Communication Guide for Traditional Kung-Fu Schools. Once drafted, the Guide was tested in its applicability through a betatesting in collaboration with the ASD Mei Hua Chuan Kung-Fu. The betatesting results provide valuable insights into the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed strategies and their potential to improve the visibility and growth of Traditional Martial Arts in a competitive environment. It emerged that the involvement and collaboration of various stakeholders in the revision and improvement of the Guide with the goal of maximizing its applicability is critical. By providing practical guidelines and recommendations, this thesis aims to contribute to the advancement of strategic communication practices in the field of Traditional Martial Arts and "less popular" sports activities by promoting awareness, value, and inclusion of all practitioners.
