Retroacting the void: void as potential of contemporary museum design in-between Castello Sforzesco's fragments

Masses and voids are the fundamental physical properties that form both the architectural and urban spaces, within centuries the city of Milan appears to have changed significantly which redefined specific characteristics of urban space. The Castle for today is a major complex of masses and voids both volumetric and systemic: The ruins of the fortress and moat demonstrate its former role as a defensive fortification and has been transformed into a landmark nowadays; The huge enclosed square demonstrate that it once served as a large parade ground to accommodate the troops stationed in the castle, now it becomes a large outdoor event venue in Milan and a daily space for people. Within the urban fabric, interesting cultural points gathering and enclosing around the Castle to place it at a central point which holds them together. The voids in the Castle, where they form, tend to define a different spatial and social status from the city, the power of voids remains its silence and stabilize. In the thesis, the memory of the Castle during transformation will be explored, tracing the changes of immaterial matter and physical boundary, re-developing a new system of voids in-between the fragments. The new interventions focus on reciprocal dialogue between ancient fortification, the present-day city and Leonardo’s codex, enhancing the relationship of the architectural space and human events. The project extends through the project of the Santo Spirito “ravelin”, revealing new pathways and outlooks of void as culturally, physically and environmentally public space to explore the potential for contemporary museum design.

Masse e vuoti sono le proprietà fisiche fondamentali che formano sia gli spazi architettonici che urbani, nel corso dei secoli la città di Milano sembra essere cambiata in modo significativo, ridefinendo le caratteristiche specifiche dello spazio urbano. Il Castello oggi è un importante complesso di masse e vuoti sia volumetrici che sistemici: le rovine della fortezza e del fossato dimostrano il suo antico ruolo di fortificazione difensiva ed è stato trasformato in un punto di riferimento al giorno d'oggi; L'enorme piazza recintata dimostra che un tempo fungeva da grande piazza d'armi per ospitare le truppe di stanza nel castello, ora diventa un grande luogo di eventi all'aperto a Milano e uno spazio quotidiano per le persone. All'interno del tessuto urbano, interessanti spunti culturali si raccolgono e si racchiudono attorno al Castello per collocarlo in un punto centrale che li tiene insieme. I vuoti nel Castello, dove si formano, tendono a definire uno statuto spaziale e sociale diverso dalla città, la forza dei vuoti resta il suo silenzio e la sua stabilizzazione. Nella tesi verrà esplorata la memoria del Castello durante la trasformazione, tracciando i cambiamenti della materia immateriale e del confine fisico, sviluppando nuovamente un nuovo sistema di vuoti tra i frammenti. I nuovi interventi si concentrano sul dialogo reciproco tra l’antica fortificazione, la città odierna e il codice leonardesco, valorizzando il rapporto tra lo spazio architettonico e le vicende umane. Il progetto si estende attraverso il progetto del “rivellino” di Santo Spirito, rivelando nuovi percorsi e prospettive del vuoto come spazio pubblico culturalmente, fisicamente e ambientalmente per esplorare le potenzialità della progettazione museale contemporanea.
