Sensorial shelter. The creative workplace with a focus on neurodivergent workers through an adaptive reuse strategy

Adaptive reuse is one of the most common practices adopted in architecture and design to achieve sustainable goals. Through the conversion of an abandoned farmhouse, the thesis will result in the project development of a workplace dedicated to creatives, with particular attention to its inclusive aspect not only with respect to physical disabilities but also considering neurodiversity as a crucial factor in the design process. Therefore, the project's objective is to implement the inclusiveness of the workplace by modifying it according to the needs of neurodiverse workers through the Adaptive Reuse strategy. The result is an innovative, creative hub for craftsmen, designers, and artists where people with different approaches to the creative process can experiment and collaborate. The project will be developed into 2 phases. The first phase will promote the project through temporary interventions for creating photo studios, exhibition spaces, and charity events to fund raising. The second phase, the one developed in the thesis project, consists of the creation of a permanent hub for workers in the creative industries with a focus on 3D printing and ceramics. Using a systemic approach, the project will bring an incubator of creativity to the city of Milan that will correspond to new trends in workplaces and reach a new level in terms of inclusiveness.

L'Adaptive reuse è una delle pratiche utilizzate nell'ambito del progetto degli spazi, orientata a perseguire obiettivi sostenibili. Attraverso la conversione d'uso di un edificio rurale esistente, la tesi sviluppa il progetto di un luogo di lavoro dedicato ai creativi con una particolare attenzione all'aspetto inclusivo del design degli spazi di lavoro non solo rispetto a disabilità fisiche ma considerando anche la neurodiversità come fattore cruciale nel processo di progettazione. Pertanto, l’obbiettivo del progetto è di implementare l’inclusività del luogo di lavoro modificandolo secondo le esigenze dei lavoratori neurodiversi attraverso la strategia dell'Adaptive Reuse. Il risultato sarà un hub creativo permanente per artigiani, designer e artisti; un ambiente di lavoro innovativo, in cui persone con approcci diversi al processo creativo potranno sperimentare e collaborare. Il progetto si svilupperà in due fasi. La prima fase sarà dedicata alla promozione del progetto attraverso interventi temporanei per la realizzazione di studi fotografici, spazi espositivi ed eventi di beneficenza per raccogliere fondi. La seconda fase, quella approfondita nell'ambito del progetto di tesi, consiste nella creazione di un hub permanente per i lavoratori delle industrie creative con particolare attenzione alla stampa 3D e alla ceramica. Utilizzando un approccio sistemico, il progetto porterà nella città di Milano un incubatore di creatività che corrisponderà alle nuove tendenze nei luoghi di lavoro e raggiungerà un nuovo livello nei termini d’inclusività.
