Abstract
Over 100 million people live in squatter or slum-like settlements in India. In 1970 the state of Tamil Nadu built the first slum rehabilitation housing (SRH) in Kotturpuram to move some of these people into permanent housing to clear Chennai’s slums. Following its perceived success, many slum clearance bodies started emerging all over the states of India to eradicate slums. These housing models, which were adequate to house occupants, turned out to be insuficient in terms of building design and layout. The traditional method of constructing housing in the form of blocks segregates people from the rest of the neighbourhood and prevents the movement of the urban fabric and people. “The more successfully a city mingles everyday diversity of uses and users in its everyday streets, the more successfully, casually (and economically) its people thereby enliven and support well-located parks that can thus give back grace and delight to their neighbourhoods instead of vacuity. ” - Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities In the thesis, we are trying to examine Kotturpuram housing in terms of architecture, connectivity with the city, and mixed-use approach to create a liveable and sustainable housing solution that integrates with the nearby urban fabric, in the direction that Jane Jacobs suggested. A model proposal featuring ideas suited to be integrated into future housing settlement is presented in detail.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
