Growing concern about resources and energy consumption in the construction industry has brought new challenges to the design of façades. An innovative and effective solution is to employ Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies. Compared to traditional techniques, AM stands out for its capacity to produce façade panels with complex geometries, offering unprecedented design freedom and enabling the production of multi-functional façades for enhanced energy efficiency and optical performances. ETH Zurich is currently in an advance phase in this research, focusing on large-scale 3D-printed thermoplastics translucent panels prototypes, yet full-scale applications in building construction remain unexplored. This thesis addresses this gap by investigating the application of large-scale 3D-printed translucent panels in an architectural case study - the Museu d'Art Digital de Barcelona (MADBA) - with the aim of bridging the divide between academic research and its practical implementation in the construction industry. The research begins with the identification of a project lot in the Provençal del Poblenou neighbourhood in Barcelona and the development of a new urban masterplan, focusing on the specific requirements of the digital art museum. Computational design is employed to shape the free-form volume of the building while exploiting the potential of 3D printing. The design is supported by the integration of environmental performance considerations, including light distribution and solar heat gains through different simulations. To effectively apply the panels to the building, a Structural Sealant Glazing (SSG) façade system is implemented, initially based on a standard glazed façade solution. The entire project is managed within a Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment, optimizing construction, maintenance and facility management throughout the building's lifespan and streamlining the application of this innovative system in the construction industry.

Abstract
The entire project is managed within a Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment, optimizing construction, maintenance and facility management throughout the building's lifespan and streamlining the application of this innovative system in the construction industry.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
