Will you live in the Cityverse? How the metaverse can become a service for the city

The Metaverse phenomenon is emerging as one of the technological hot trends of the coming years. At the same time, societies and cities are in a process of transformation, continually reinventing themselves to improve their economic and technological performance and to improve their competitiveness in dealing with ongoing urban changes. Each community and city face different problems regarding their "core," also wants to improve their performance to be efficient.  To address this problem, many public organizations have implemented various projects within them to develop new business opportunities and ensure the evolution of the Metaverse. On the other hand, cities have faced various challenges, from rapid population growth to high energy demand to high service standards in urban areas. In developed countries, challenges include declining birth rates, an aging society that requires better health services, and deteriorating physical infrastructure such as buildings, roads, water and sewage systems, and the power grid. In addition, the environmental situation is a global problem: rising carbon dioxide emissions and frequent natural disasters are pressing issues. A new world, new challenges, new ways, and paths require something to reshape people's lives, and perhaps an accurate response to solve this could be successful small smart communities, which can be a trend model for others around, and could have a snowball effect in a higher scale, even transforming cities or countries. The results show an interesting point regarding the idea of those on the Metaverse, its enabling factors and its limitations, showing in both cases that the experience is positive and requires further improvement for the technology to reach maturity to exploit its features under the best possible conditions. The Metaverse sees in the city and vice versa, the city sees in the Metaverse great possibilities and opportunities to render to citizens and communities an excellent and advanced quality of life.  This research thesis wants to oversee the technological changes that brought the metaverse, defining the progress that brought to the creation of smart objects, to smart cities, to digital twin systems and later, in the immersive world of metaverse.

Il fenomeno del Metaverso sta emergendo come una delle tendenze tecnologiche dei prossimi anni. Allo stesso tempo, le società e le città sono in un processo di trasformazione, reinventandosi continuamente per migliorare le loro prestazioni economiche e tecnologiche e per migliorare la loro competitività nell'affrontare i cambiamenti urbani in corso. Ogni comunità e città affronta problemi diversi per quanto riguarda il proprio "nucleo", ma vuole anche migliorare le proprie prestazioni per essere efficiente. Per affrontare questo problema, molte organizzazioni pubbliche hanno implementato vari progetti al loro interno per sviluppare nuove opportunità di business e garantire l'evoluzione del Metaverso. D'altra parte, le città hanno affrontato diverse sfide, dalla rapida crescita della popolazione all'elevata domanda di energia, fino agli elevati standard di servizio nelle aree urbane. Nei Paesi sviluppati, le sfide includono il calo delle nascite, l'invecchiamento della società che richiede migliori servizi sanitari e il deterioramento delle infrastrutture fisiche come edifici, strade, sistemi idrici e fognari e la rete elettrica. Inoltre, la situazione ambientale è un problema globale: l'aumento delle emissioni di anidride carbonica e i frequenti disastri naturali sono questioni urgenti. Un nuovo mondo, nuove sfide, nuove strade e percorsi richiedono qualcosa che rimodelli la vita delle persone, e forse una risposta accurata per risolvere questo problema potrebbe essere il successo di piccole comunità intelligenti, che possono essere un modello di tendenza per altri intorno, e potrebbero avere un effetto a valanga in una scala più alta, anche trasformando città o paesi. I risultati mostrano un punto interessante per quanto riguarda l'idea di quelli sul Metaverso, i suoi fattori abilitanti e i suoi limiti, mostrando in entrambi i casi che l'esperienza è positiva e richiede ulteriori miglioramenti affinché la tecnologia raggiunga la maturità per sfruttare le sue caratteristiche nelle migliori condizioni possibili. Il Metaverso vede nella città e viceversa, la città vede nel Metaverso grandi possibilità e opportunità per rendere ai cittadini e alle comunità una qualità di vita eccellente e avanzata. Questa tesi di ricerca vuole supervisionare i cambiamenti tecnologici che hanno portato al metaverso, definendo i progressi che hanno portato alla creazione di oggetti intelligenti, alle città intelligenti, ai sistemi di gemelli digitali e, successivamente, al mondo immersivo del metaverso.
