An abandoned former industrial area that is a major growth hotbed in the near future : regain industrial charm with street art-inspired lighting product design

This thesis examines the conception, design, and application of a novel lighting solution specifically adapted to the requirements of the Darsena district, a historically significant but long-neglected indust rial sector inside Ravenna City. The main goal is to celebrate Darsena’s dynamic street and wall art cultu re while boosting its nocturnal character to support ongoing urban rehabilitation initiatives in Darsena. The purpose of this study is to address the problems caused by Darsena’s development into a thri ving metropolitan center. This region, once a symbol of industrial collapse, has recently undergo ne a revival and drawn a wide variety of inhabitants and tourists. A new lighting system that is adap tive, contemporary, rigid, and low-maintenance is needed to preserve the essence of Darsena’s legacy while fostering its modern evolution. This can be accomplished by establishing a street sculpture. This thesis proposes a design that pays honor to these foundations by drawing inspira tion from the district’s history, which is distinguished by its industrial heritage and artis tic expression through street and wall art. The lighting item incorporates aspects of indust rial design and blends in beautifully with Darsena’s artistic brilliance. Due to its versatility, dynamic lighting designs can change in response to the district’s varying demands, events, and seasons. This study adds to the understanding of Darsena as well as the larger conversation on urban re newal and adaptable design. The lighting item represents the blending of the past and present in a city on the verge of transformation, acting as a beacon of development. It also illustrates how de sign interventions can revitalize run-down metropolitan areas while keeping their distinct identities. In conclusion, this thesis presents a thorough investigation of a product design that, by embracing its history, creative culture, and the difficulties of current urban regeneration, reveals and enhances the urban fabric of Darsena, Ravenna City. Questa tesi esamina la concezione, la progettazione e l’applicazione di una nuova soluzione di illu minazione specificamente adattata alle esigenze del quartiere Darsena, un settore industriale stori camente significativo ma a lungo trascurato all’interno della città di Ravenna. L’obiettivo principale è quello di celebrare la dinamica cultura della street art e della wall art della Darsena, rafforzandone al contempo il carattere notturno per sostenere le iniziative di riabilitazione urbana in corso nella Darsena. Lo scopo di questo studio è affrontare i problemi causati dallo sviluppo di Darsena in un fiorente centro metro politano. Questa regione, un tempo simbolo del collasso industriale, ha recentemente subito una rinascita e ha attirato un’ampia varietà di abitanti e turisti. È necessario un nuovo sistema di illuminazione che sia adattivo, contemporaneo, rigido e che richieda poca manutenzione per preservare l’essenza dell’eredità della Darsena favorendo al contempo la sua evoluzione moderna. Ciò può essere ottenuto creando una scultura stradale. Questa tesi propone un progetto che rende onore a queste fondazioni traendo ispirazione dalla sto ria del distretto, che si distingue per il suo patrimonio industriale e l’espressione artistica attraverso la street art e la wall art. L’oggetto d’illuminazione incorpora aspetti del design industriale e si fonde magnificamente con lo splendore artistico di Darsena. Grazie alla sua versatilità, i progetti di illumi nazione dinamica possono cambiare in risposta alle mutevoli richieste, eventi e stagioni del distretto. Questo studio contribuisce alla comprensione della Darsena e al dibattito più ampio sul rinnovamento ur bano e sulla progettazione adattabile.
