Pathways to Sustainable Production: Evaluating the Environmental Sustainability of Lean Practices and Mapping the Interconnections among Green Practices

The objective of the thesis is to analyze the impact of the main Lean practices on companies’ environmental performance and investigate the existing interconnections among industrial practices that, either directly or indirectly, affect environmental sustainability, considering the economic and ecological aspects. The qualitative result consists of a set of guidelines to address and prioritize investments toward environmental sustainability, within industrial businesses. The relationships identified among the practices, either belonging to the Lean paradigm or relative to the Green Supply Chain domain, allow for eco-optimization of the corporate structure, also considering the return on investments. The study of literature represented the foundation of the work since it enabled the formulation of the two research questions. The eco-sustainable performance of Lean practices and the interconnections among all the practices impacting on environmental sustainability have been investigated through some inductive hypotheses. The latter have been formulated and explored through five case studies. The five companies analyzed have different features in terms of operating sector, portfolio of products, customers, and objectives. Firstly, a within-case analysis of the five companies considered has been performed, leading to circumscribed results. Subsequently, a cross-case analysis has allowed for a comparison of the results, thus leading to more precision conclusions. It has been found that the eco-sustainability of Lean practices and the relationships among industrial practices impacting environmental sustainability can be either generalizable or dependent on certain specific company factors related to the operational context. The main limitation of the study is the small-sized sample of companies considered. The restriction is due to the high level of innovativeness of Green practices and to the low propensity of companies to share information concerning their environmental impact. A further development could be the conduction of a quantitative analysis, addressing the same research questions to assess numerically the advantages related to the identified interconnections.

L’ obiettivo della tesi è analizzare l’impatto delle principali pratiche del Lean Manufacturing sulle performance ambientali delle aziende e indagare le interconnessioni fra le partiche industriali impattanti sulla sostenibilità ambientale, in modo diretto o indiretto, tenendo conto dell’aspetto economico ed eco-sostenibile. Il risultato, di tipo qualitativo, è costituito da linee guida che indirizzano e prioritizzano gli investimenti delle compagnie nell’adozione di pratiche ambientalmente sostenibili. Le relazioni tra le diverse pratiche, sia relative al paradigma della Lean che al dominio della Green Supply Chain, permettono di eco ottimizzare l’assetto aziendale, tenendo conto del ritorno sugli investimenti. Le due domande di ricerca sono state identificate grazie allo studio della letteratura. L’indagine sulle performance eco-sostenibili delle pratiche Lean e l’identificazione delle interconnessioni tra tutte le pratiche impattanti sull’ambiente sono state possibili attraverso la validazione di ipotesi induttive, formulate e poi indagate grazie a cinque casi studio di tipo esplorativo. Le cinque aziende hanno caratteristiche differenti in termini di settore, portfolio di prodotti, clienti e obiettivi. In primo luogo, per ogni azienda è stata effettuata un’analisi interna, che ha generato risultati circoscritti. In secondo luogo, un’analisi incrociata ha permesso di comparare i risultati e di giungere a conclusioni più precise. L’eco-sostenibilità delle pratiche Lean e le relazioni tra le partiche industriali che impattano sulla sostenibilità ambientale talvolta sono risultate generalizzabili, talvolta dipendenti da alcuni fattori aziendali relativi al settore operativo. La limitazione principale dello studio è la dimensione ridotta del campione di aziende causata dall’alto livello di innovazione delle pratiche Green e dalla scarsa predisposizione delle compagnie nel condividere informazioni sul loro impatto ambientale. Un possibile sviluppo è condurre un’analisi quantitativa per rispondere alle stesse domande di ricerca e valutare numericamente i vantaggi associati alle interconnessioni identificate.
