This thesis focuses on the representation of Taiwan's built environment during the period of Japanese colonial rule through the medium of photography. It aims to analyze how photography played a role in documenting and portraying the architectural and urban landscape of Taiwan during this historical period. The research will include studying various photographs taken by official Japanese photographers during Japan's colonial period. By studying these photographs, as well as maps and urban policies of the time, the dissertation will analyze the visual representation of Taiwan's built environment, including infrastructure, buildings, public spaces, and urban planning initiatives. The study will dive into a variety of photographic representational elements, such as architectural trends, urban planning concepts, colonial influences, and the evolution of the built environment. The project attempts to reveal the goals, points of view, and narratives underlying the visual recording of Taiwan's built environment during Japanese administration by analyzing the composition, framing, and subject matter of the photographs. Through this thesis, this article aims to gain a deeper understanding of the role of documentary photography in representing and documenting the built environment of Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. By critically examining these visual records, and re-recording themselves, the comparison provides a clear understanding of how Taipei became a modern city under Japanese colonization and transformed into what it is today. Research aims to contribute to a broader understanding of colonial heritage in Taiwan's architectural and urban history.
