In the last decades, Placemaking has emerged, intending to tackle the complexity of cities and towns by co-creating meaningful places for the inhabitants. Placemaking is defined to be context-sensitive and collaborative, which makes it appropriate for community-centered design approaches. The designer becomes the facilitator and can maximize the shared value of the spaces with the local communities. This thesis explores how Placemaking is interconnected with several Design Disciplines through the implementation of its methods and tools in developing an intervention in common spaces. More specifically, this thesis focuses on the community in the neighborhood of NoLo, located in Northern Milan (Italy). NoLo is characterized as an activist, multi-ethnic area that has remarkably evolved during the last few years, creating a more livable neighborhood. However, after analyzing its public spaces, it has been realized that there needs to be better places for its citizens to thrive. Therefore, it is intended to enable the neighborhood to collectively enhance its public spaces, boosting the sense of community. To that end, a practical proposal is presented for the neighborhood’s amusement in public spaces through participatory dynamics, following Service Design methods, and implementing its tools. Spatial Design and Communication Design also provided valuable perspectives in the Placemaking proposal, contributing from different angles to the project. The proposal aims to activate public spaces through the project NoLo Olimpiadi, a neighborhood Olympics designed for the youngest generations of the area, who can have fun doing sports and other communal activities in NoLo’s public spaces. The initiative adapts to the different levels of eagerness and diverse interests present in the citizens of the area. NoLo Olimpiadi has been designed as a Placemaking proposal where Design goes beyond and addresses the issue more thoroughly, tackling the complex tissue of the context of the NoLo neighborhood.

Abstract
NoLo Olimpiadi has been designed as a Placemaking proposal where Design goes beyond and addresses the issue more thoroughly, tackling the complex tissue of the context of the NoLo neighborhood.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
