For this reason, SMEs need help in their journey towards sustainability, considering their limits of action compared to larger companies. The research conducted identifies gaps in the sustainability certifications available to small and medium-sized enterprises, while, in contrast, several models have been proposed to large companies, which due to their size can implement sustainable measures and measure their impact. Some standards appear to be universally applicable, but it is clear that SMEs cannot be regarded as miniature versions of larger companies. Differences in terms of organizational structure, number of resources, and economic availability cannot be overlooked. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to develop a reference model that can be used by small and medium-sized companies to measure their level of sustainability. The proposed model, called SISME, is made up of several self-assessment questions, which are easy to analyse by companies belonging to any type of sector. In addition to generic business questions, the framework is divided into four main areas concerning the governance section, the environmental section, the social section, and the digital section. After completing the questionnaire, the company will be assigned a score that is perfectly in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the innovative thrust of the model is the fact that digital transformation is present as a transversal element in the different sections. The Italian company Interiors Idea SRL was selected to test the proposed model.

Abstract
Small and medium-sized enterprises are the engine of the European economy, and their contribution is very likely to grow in the future. Although this represents an important opportunity for economic development, it could turn out to be a problem if analysed from a sustainable point of view. Sustainability is a vital topic, and the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this awareness process. One can no longer imagine the corporate world without proper sustainable management in order to protect the planet, combat inequalities and maintain a good competitive position in the market.
