The city of Thiers, renowned for its global influence in the cutlery industry, currently finds itself in a paradoxical situation. Despite producing 80% of cutlery pieces in France, the city has undergone a significant decline in the past four decades, marked by an inactive population, vacant homes, a lack of services, and a diminishing attractiveness. Urban initiatives implemented by the municipality, though commendable, are punctual and disconnected, lacking an integrated vision and not taking into account the importance of the cutlery not only as a patrimony for a museum, but as the engine of the urban development. This research aims to address this paradox by exploring the specificities of Thiers, through an analysis of the historical production system, the echoes on the architectural typology and the changes on the natural landscape, until the description of the current territorial organization. The research identifies three key capitals for Thiers: landscape, spatial capital, and savoir faire. These elements form the basis for the development of place based, multifunctional, and multiscale spatial strategy. The proposal culminates into a possible scenario where Thiers hosts an extensive educational and production complex, serving as an incubator for training the cutlers of the future, showing the urban returns of investing in Thiers’ values. The strategy presents an alternative to the current vision of the municipality. Through an approach that values local heritage and promotes specialized training, the aim is to revitalize Thiers and ensure its industrial competitiveness on a global scale, demostranting that the cutlery can still shape the city. The research underscores the importance of considering Thiers as an integrated fabric of resources and potentials that deserve to be discovered and cultivated for the benefit of the community and local industry.

Abstract
The research underscores the importance of considering Thiers as an integrated fabric of resources and potentials that deserve to be discovered and cultivated for the benefit of the community and local industry.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
