The ex-colonia elioterapica by BBPR. A project for preservation, reuse and energy efficiency of a rationalist monument

This thesis deals with the restoration of a monument of Modern architecture in Italy: the ex-colonia elioterapica in Legnano, built by BBPR in 1937-1938. The first three hcapters analyse the context around the building from different perspective: the history of the city of Legnano and one of its most prominent insitutions, the hospital, which currently owns the building; the typology of a colonia estiva, which is a kind of building that is deeply connected to its time, to the point of representing one of its most widespread and visible expressions; the state of modern architecture at the time the building was being realised, and the location of BBPR within such context. This works then continues with a recontruction of the history of the building itself, supported by archival research, in-site surveys and bibliographical studies. An analysis of its transformations and of its current state was also performed and it is presented here. Lastly, a design proposal is presented, based upon a SWOT analysis, an energy efficiency project, a preservation project and, finally, some architectural references. The final project aims at the preservation of the existing matter, the efficiency of its final state, the re-use of its spaces and the enhancement of the main stakeholders' (the city council and the local jospital) projects for the area, creating room for the local Psychosocial Centre and activating a long-lived project for an urban park in the area.

Questa tesi si occupa del restauro di un monumento dell'architettura moderna in Italia: l'ex-colonia elioterapica di Legnano, costruita dai BBPR nel 1937-1938. I primi tre capitoli analizzano il contesto dell'edificio da diverse prospettive: la storia della città di Legnano e di una delle sue istituzioni più importanti, l'ospedale, attuale proprietario dell'edificio; la tipologia della colonia estiva, che è un tipo di edificio profondamente legato al suo tempo, al punto da rappresentarne una delle espressioni più diffuse e visibili; lo stato dell'architettura moderna all'epoca della realizzazione dell'edificio e la collocazione dei BBPR in tale contesto. Il lavoro prosegue poi con una ricostruzione della storia dell'edificio stesso, supportata da ricerche d'archivio, sopralluoghi e studi bibliografici. È stata inoltre effettuata un'analisi delle sue trasformazioni e del suo stato attuale, che viene qui presentata. Infine, viene presentata una proposta progettuale basata su un'analisi SWOT, un progetto di efficienza energetica, un progetto di conservazione e, infine, alcuni riferimenti architettonici. Il progetto finale mira alla conservazione dell'esistente, all'efficientamento del suo stato finale, al riutilizzo dei suoi spazi e alla valorizzazione dei progetti dei principali stakeholder (il Comune e l'ospedale locale) per l'area, creando spazio per il Centro psicosociale e attivando un progetto di lunga durata per un parco urbano nella zona.
