The increased demand for security in the urban context has made the adoption of effective approaches to address this issue essential. This thesis aims to examine the importance of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as a fundamental strategy to ensure safety in public spaces, an integral and essential part of collective life. Despite the decrease in crimes, ISTAT investigations reveal a persistent perception of insecurity among citizens that negatively influences the quality of urban life and the attractiveness of public spaces. Within this thesis, it is demonstrated that the perception of insecurity is shaped by various factors, including social, economic, and physical space characteristics. Therefore, careful design of public space emerges as a key element to counteract insecurity. CPTED, originating in the United States and spreading to Europe since the ‘90s, integrates urban planning, design, and urban management to positively influence human behavior, reducing the risk of crime and the perception of insecurity in urban spaces. In Europe, several essential tools have been developed, such as ISO 22341:2021 and CEN TS 14383-2:2022, for the implementation and dissemination of this approach. How does the adoption of CPTED translate into tangible benefits for safety in public spaces? What evidence emerges from the analysis of selected case studies, demonstrating the significant role of CPTED in improving the perception of safety? How can the application of this strategy distinctively contribute to the well-being of individuals and communities?

Abstract
How can the application of this strategy distinctively contribute to the well-being of individuals and communities?File | Dimensione | Formato | |
