You, me, and the AI between us : a socio-ethical critique of urban artificial intelligence

This thesis takes a sociological and ethical approach to urban AI research and considers questions that AI is raising about the future of urban life. Specifically, this thesis provides a theoretical response to the impact that AI is having on the mobility and housing sectors. It suggests that the social and ethical transformations brought upon by Urban AI are a continuation of other techno-societal conditions already explored in urban studies. It puts forth a framework for considering Urban AI as tool that further distances and imbalances relationships and accessibility in urban spaces. The conclusion of this thesis is a set of guiding principles and initial explorations into what is becoming one of the more important topics in urban planning, theory, and policy: Artificial Intelligence.

Questa tesi adotta un approccio sociologico ed etico alla ricerca sull'intelligenza artificiale urbana e considera le domande che l'intelligenza artificiale sta sollevando sul futuro della vita urbana. Nello specifico, questa tesi fornisce una risposta teorica all’impatto che l’IA sta avendo sui settori della mobilità e dell’edilizia abitativa. Suggerisce che le trasformazioni sociali ed etiche apportate dall’intelligenza artificiale urbana sono una continuazione di altre condizioni tecno-sociali già esplorate negli studi urbani. Propone un quadro per considerare l’intelligenza artificiale urbana come uno strumento che allontana ulteriormente e sbilancia le relazioni e l’accessibilità negli spazi urbani. La conclusione di questa tesi è un insieme di principi guida e esplorazioni iniziali su quello che sta diventando uno degli argomenti più importanti nella pianificazione, teoria e politica urbana: l’intelligenza artificiale.
