The subject of the following thesis is to discuss the main deterioration phenomenon that characterizes asphalt road pavements: fatigue cracking. The opportunity for this study arises from the need to evaluate the increase in fatigue life of pavements through the use of asphalt mixes obtained by modification processes, in order also to understand what are the main mechanical and rheological characteristics of the mix such as to influence its fatigue life. An initial analysis of laboratory tests performed on asphalt mixes subjected to modification shows that they exhibit a longer fatigue life than conventional asphalt mixes. It is inferred from the tests that the stiffness modulus is not the most representative parameter of the fatigue life of the asphalt conglomerate; in fact, it has been shown that with the same stiffness modulus but different percentage of additive in the mix, the fatigue life of an asphalt conglomerate can vary substantially. Highlighted the numerosity and variability of existing fatigue laws in the world used in design, predominantly obtained from elaborations carried out in the 1970s, when modified bitumens had not yet taken hold, a correction of Verstraeten’s formulation is proposed. The reworking of Verstraeten’s law, in accordance with the results of laboratory tests, makes it possible to estimate a fatigue life for the mixtures analyzed that better represents the actual behavior encountered.

Abstract
The reworking of Verstraeten’s law, in accordance with the results of laboratory tests, makes it possible to estimate a fatigue life for the mixtures analyzed that better represents the actual behavior encountered.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
