Abstract
The compact and generic urban fabric extends itself following the layout of the Beruto Plan defining the character of the city of Milan, leaving limited space for formal and social exceptions. Public space is neglected and overwritten by an incessant search for space that can be colonized by private development. The Twentieth century addresses this way the expansionist plans of the Lombard city, and today, in the contemporary city we ask whose public space is it? Capitalist logic does not consider the possibility of offering, but only of receiving. The contemporary city becomes hermetic, closed. Buildings abandon the character of generosity that distinguished quality architecture truly interested in the public. Collective space becomes a “luxury” within the city. Our research assumes the need to think about quality collective space within the city, starting from the dialogue between the form of the project and the existing urban form to the need to carve and retrive collective space within the buildings. Our intention is to investigate this duality by finding the focus in the ground floor of the building, of how it could accommodate a space liveable by the community. A space thought of as an interface between the city and the building itself, a hybrid condition in which to be inside the building but still feel part of the city. A dual condition also in the attitude addressed to the design of spaces, an analysis addressed to the archetypal forms of public space and human attitudes around this form. A series of past design experiences find space in parallel with the theoretical narrative that addresses at different architectural scales the attitude that monumental figures of collective spaces have with respect to the city: on a large scale that of controlling the space, while on a small scale that of connecting with the user.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
