This thesis presents a comprehensive study of integrating twin transitions – digital and green – in traditional agriculture, focusing on Cascina Grande, a historic farm situated in the peri-urban area of Milan. The research follows a holistic cycle from production to waste management, aiming to foster community, industrial, and farm engagement through a sustainable model. The study leverages metropolitan cartography as a digital tool to facilitate this transition, highlighting the potential of advanced technologies in transforming agricultural practices. The digital transition encompasses the adoption of technologies such as precision farming, and data analytics, aiming to enhance efficiency and productivity in agricultural processes. Concurrently, the green transition focuses on sustainable practices like regenerative agriculture and renewable energy, aiming to minimize environmental impact and promote ecological sustainability. This thesis examines Cascina Grande's architectural heritage, historical context, and current operational practices to propose a model for integrating these transitions. The farm's unique peri-urban location offers both challenges and opportunities, positioning it at the crossroads of urban development and rural tradition. The research emphasizes creating a symbiotic relationship between the farm, local community, and surrounding industries. By implementing a model that encompasses the entire cycle from production to waste management, the study aims to establish a closed-loop system that enhances resource efficiency and reduces environmental footprint. The findings of this study have significant implications for the future of agriculture in peri-urban areas. They provide a blueprint for how traditional farms can adopt digital and green innovations to remain relevant and sustainable. This approach not only preserves the cultural and historical essence of farms like Cascina Grande but also positions them as pioneers in the journey towards a more sustainable, technologically advanced agricultural sector. The study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable urban development, offering insights into the integration of agriculture with urban and industrial ecosystems.

Abstract
The study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable urban development, offering insights into the integration of agriculture with urban and industrial ecosystems.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
