The energy transition is at the center of United Nations agenda and EU policies are increasingly becoming relevant in determining the political choices of most countries. In order to achieve the decarbonisation goals, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the electrification of final consumptions must be supported by innovations that integrate both the technical and market aspects. In this context, energy storage systems and energy communities are expected to play a key role. Currently dominated by lithium-ion batteries, electrochemical storage systems represent an innovation in the electricity grid and energy markets. As new and progressively cheaper sources of flexibility, they can deal with the needs of a system increasingly conditioned by the uncertainty of intermittent renewable energy sources. Energy communities, on the other hand, consist of innovative business models that allow final consumers to aggregate together to implement decentralized energy projects; their purpose is the sharing of economic, social, and environmental benefits among members. After a detailed review of the European and Italian regulatory framework, the thesis proposes the development of two models whose objective is to simulate energy flows of an energy community in the presence of storage capacity. The first model considers a traditional Battery Management System (BMS), while the second one considers an innovative BMS, specifically designed to address the objectives of the thesis. The models’ outputs are then processed by financial instruments which provide information on the profitability of the different configurations.

Abstract
The models’ outputs are then processed by financial instruments which provide information on the profitability of the different configurations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
