Synergies in space: a park-museum of the crafts for interdisciplinary collaboration at Porta Genova

Part of the essence of architecture is the constant dwelling of technique and art, functionality, and aesthetics. As architects we are in an unceasing pursue of balance between both with the sole purpose of enhancing and celebrating life through space. The time in which the building is design in addition to the function it will host, defines the dynamics that will develop in its interior. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to reflect around a model of coworking space between conventional professions, the ones that work in and an office, and artisans, who works in workshops with unique characteristics depending on their craft. Which could tackle the new needs and preference for working in our time. If this kind of spaces are promoted and managed by public private partnerships they could have a broader reach becoming a service and a public space for the city. For this reason the proposed site to developed this reflection is in Milan, in the railway yard of Porta Genova. The work is divided in three chapters. First, is research around the office that reflects around the elements that can create a comfort for the user beyond the physical one, more related to the psychological comfort, and the current situation of the craftsmanship sector in Italy and Milan. The methodology used to analyze the topics of the first part will be through research focused mainly on knowledge created by companies that are leaders in developing office buildings and furniture design, like Gensler and Vitra. This information will be complemented with academic research focused on psychological analysis of the use of space and finally examples that will clarify the implementation of the strategies and architectural elements discussed. For the second part the focus will be mainly on quantification data from official entities both, European and Italian. The second chapter focuses on the plans and needs the city of Milan have for the upcoming years to select the most suitable site for the project. The methodology for this chapter is first research about the official plans of the municipality, like the PGT 2030 and the plan for the railway yards. And second an onsite survey through photographs and analytical maps to understand the dynamics, problems and needs of the area. The last chapter is the project, which is a park museum for the crafts in which the objective is not only to create a space in which different profession can co-create among artisans, but also be a public space for the city in which the craftmanship industry is promote and celebrated.

Parte dell'essenza dell'architettura è la costante dimora di tecnica e arte, funzionalità ed estetica. Come architetti siamo alla continua ricerca di un equilibrio tra entrambi, con l'unico scopo di migliorare e celebrare la vita attraverso lo spazio. Il tempo in cui l'edificio viene progettato, oltre alla funzione che ospiterà, definisce le dinamiche che si svilupperanno al suo interno. Lo scopo di questa tesi di laurea magistrale è quello di riflettere su un modello di spazio di coworking tra le professioni convenzionali, quelle che lavorano in un ufficio, e gli artigiani, che lavorano in laboratori con caratteristiche uniche a seconda del loro mestiere. Questo potrebbe rispondere alle nuove esigenze e preferenze lavorative del nostro tempo. Se questo tipo di spazi è promosso e gestito da partnership pubblico-privato, potrebbe avere una portata più ampia, diventando un servizio e uno spazio pubblico per la città. Per questo motivo il luogo proposto per sviluppare questa riflessione è Milano, nello scalo ferroviario di Porta Genova. Il lavoro è suddiviso in tre capitoli. Il primo è una ricerca sull'ufficio che riflette sugli elementi che possono creare un comfort per l'utente al di là di quello fisico, più legato al comfort psicologico, e sulla situazione attuale del settore artigianale in Italia e a Milano. La metodologia utilizzata per analizzare gli argomenti della prima parte sarà una ricerca incentrata principalmente sulle conoscenze create da aziende leader nello sviluppo di edifici per uffici e nel design di mobili, come Gensler e Vitra. Queste informazioni saranno integrate da ricerche accademiche incentrate sull'analisi psicologica dell'uso dello spazio e infine da esempi che chiariranno l'attuazione delle strategie e degli elementi architettonici discussi. Nella seconda parte l'attenzione si concentrerà principalmente sui dati di quantificazione provenienti da enti ufficiali sia europei che italiani. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sui piani e sulle esigenze della città di Milano per i prossimi anni, al fine di selezionare il sito più adatto per il progetto. La metodologia di questo capitolo prevede innanzitutto una ricerca sui piani ufficiali del Comune, come il PGT 2030 e il piano per gli scali ferroviari. In secondo luogo, un'indagine in loco attraverso fotografie e mappe analitiche per comprendere le dinamiche, i problemi e le esigenze dell'area. L'ultimo capitolo riguarda il progetto, che è un parco-museo per l'artigianato in cui l'obiettivo non è solo quello di creare uno spazio in cui diverse professioni possano co-creare tra gli artigiani, ma anche di essere uno spazio pubblico per la città in cui l'artigianato viene promosso e celebrato.
