Abitare il suolo

Considering an uneven and irregular urban fabric, the project consists in prefiguring the new northern development of the contemporary city of Syracuse. The final masterplan represents the effort to rebuild a higher order, attributable to the few “remnants” evident in the urban fabric and firmly founded in the harsh nature of the soil. The aim of the project is to provide guidelines, a settlement principle that builds a criterion to be followed for the future growth of the city, considering the hypothetical decommissioning of a military area, currently disused. The development masterplan includes two branches, perched above a large rocky plateau: one consists in the linear extension of an important in the urban history of Syracuse, the other establishes a limit to the unruly growth of the city. The two parts of the city delimit a vast natural park, where the spontaneous vegetation and the rough texture of the soil reconstruct the real essence of the territory. This study crosses the different project scales to focus with greater attention on the deepening of a courtyard, urban module given by the relationship between several buildings, which through the connection to the project axis, is a repeatable mode of development through some variations. This module hosts two blocks of residences and a sports complex consisting of two hall buildings and an underground system. Each of these buildings has been the subject of design up to the definition of the constructive nodes, with parallel attention to the compositional, technological, structural, plant and sustainability aspects.

Alla luce di un tessuto urbano disomogeneo e irregolare, il progetto consiste nella prefigurazione del nuovo sviluppo settentrionale della città di Siracusa contemporanea. Il masterplan definitivo rappresenta lo sforzo di ricostruire un ordine superiore, riconducibile alle poche “permanenze” evidenti nel tessuto urbano e saldamente fondato nell’aspra natura del suolo. L’intento del progetto è di fornire delle linee guida, un principio insediativo che costruisca un criterio da seguire per la futura crescita della città, nell’ottica dell’ipotetica dismissione di un’area militare, attualmente in disuso. Il masterplan di sviluppo include due diramazioni, inerpicate al di sopra di un grande altopiano roccioso: una consiste nell’estensione lineare di un asse caratteristico per la storia urbana di Siracusa, l’altra stabilisce un limite alla crescita indisciplinata della città. Le due parti di città delimitano un vasto parco naturale, dove la vegetazione spontanea e la consistenza scabra del suolo ricostruiscono la reale essenza del territorio. Il presente studio attraversa le diverse scale di progetto per soffermarsi con maggiore attenzione sull’approfondimento di una corte, modulo urbano dato dal rapporto tra più edifici, che tramite l’innesto all’asse di progetto, costituisce una modalità di sviluppo ripetibile in diverse modalità. Tale modulo ospita due blocchi di residenze ed un complesso sportivo composto da due edifici ad aula ed un sistema ipogeo. Ciascuno di questi edifici è stato oggetto di progettazione sino alla definizione dei nodi costruttivi, con attenzione parallela agli aspetti compositivi, tecnologici, strutturali, impiantistici e di sostenibilità.
