Iconic projects designed by the most famous and renowned firms have been used with the aim of improving the image of the cities and also providing an opportunity for further development. Different types of iconic architecture have been examined such as iconic buildings and sky scrapers but infrastructure projects have not been noticed so often in those investigation. In this thesis, I will focus on iconic infrastructure projects and their impact on city development. Perhaps one of the most successful firms in this term is Santiago Calatrava named after architect-engineer. Calatrava is a renowned architect and engineer who has made significant contributions to the field of infrastructure by designing and constructing iconic structures that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, that is why this firm has been selected. This thesis investigates the urban effects of transnational infrastructure projects designed by Calatrava Santiago, focusing on a selected set of case studies located in different countries. The research aims to explore, analyze and compare the contribution of these projects to the overall urban fabric within cities or regions. Firstly, it is important to note that Calatrava's infrastructure projects have been widely circulated and implemented in various cities around the world, ranging from Valencia, Spain to Dallas, Texas. These projects have had a significant impact on the urban development of these cities, both in terms of their physical appearance and functionality. Furthermore, Calatrava's infrastructure projects have had a significant impact on the urban development of cities by promoting economic growth and social interaction. For instance, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York City not only serves as a transportation hub but also includes commercial spaces that have contributed to the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhood and increased foot traffic, resulting in economic growth. Similarly, the Alameda Bridge in Valencia has become a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, promoting social interaction and community engagement. The thesis will start with an introduction in terms of the literature on iconicity and icon projects followed by presentation of a collection of Calatrava transnational projects, including its infrastructure projects focusing on bridges and stations. Then three of the most notable projects of Calatrava infrastructure projects will be selected to be explored in depth to investigate their impact on the urban development of their cities. A template has been developed to facilitate the analysis and comparison of the projects, consisting of key elements such as location, iconic design, urban effects, visual effects, and functional analysis. This systematic analysis aims to examine the transformative power and efficiency of Calatrava infrastructure projects, the captivating visual effects created by these projects and explores their functionality. The research findings aim to provide valuable insights into the circulation and impact of Calatrava infrastructure projects, contributing to the understanding of their role in shaping urban environments.
I Progetti iconici firmati da architetti famosi spesso sono utilizzati con l'obiettivo di migliorare l'immagine delle città e fornire migliori opportunità di sviluppo. In letteratura sono stati esaminati diversi tipi di architettura iconica. Tuttavia i progetti infrastrutturali non sono stati approfonditi da specifiche indagini. Questa tesi si concentra sui progetti infrastrutturali iconici e sul loro impatto sullo sviluppo della città. Uno degli studio di progettazione di maggior successo è Santiago Calatrava, dal nome dell'architetto-ingegnere. Calatrava ha dato un contributo significativo al campo delle infrastrutture progettando e costruendo strutture iconiche che sono sia funzionali che esteticamente innovative. Queste sono alcune delle ragioni per la scelta di questo studio di progettazione per queste analisi. Questa tesi indaga gli effetti urbani dei progetti infrastrutturali transnazionali progettati dallo studio di progettazione Calatrava Santiago, concentrandosi su sei casi studio situati in diversi paesi. La ricerca si propone di esplorare, analizzare e confrontare il contributo di questi progetti al tessuto urbano complessivo all’interno delle città. Innanzitutto è importante notare che i progetti infrastrutturali di Calatrava hanno avuto ampia diffusione e realizzazione in diverse città del mondo, da Valencia in Spagna a Dallas in Texas, Stati Uniti. Questi progetti hanno avuto un impatto significativo sullo sviluppo urbano di queste città, sia in termini di aspetto fisico che funzionale. Inoltre, i progetti infrastrutturali di Calatrava hanno avuto un impatto significativo sullo sviluppo urbano delle città promuovendo la crescita economica e l'interazione sociale. Ad esempio, il World Trade Center Transportation Hub di New York City non funge solo da hub di trasporti ma comprende anche spazi commerciali che hanno contribuito alla rivitalizzazione del quartiere circostante e all’aumento del traffico pedonale. Allo stesso modo, il Ponte Alameda a Valencia è diventato un luogo di ritrovo popolare sia per la gente del posto che per i turisti, promuovendo l’interazione sociale e l’impegno della comunità. La tesi introduce inizialmente la letteratura sui progetti iconici seguiti dalla presentazione del profilo dello studio di progettazione di Calatrava e di una raccolta di progetti transnazionali infrastrutturali (ponti e stazioni) di Calatrava. Quindi sei dei progetti di ponti e di stazioni di Calatrava saranno selezionati per essere esplorati in profondità per indagare il loro impatto sullo sviluppo urbano delle loro città. È stato sviluppato un modello per facilitare l'analisi e il confronto dei progetti, costituito da elementi chiave come posizione, design iconico, effetti urbani, effetti visivi e analisi funzionale. Questa analisi sistematica mira a esaminare il potenziale trasformativo e gli effetti dei progetti infrastrutturali di Calatrava, da vari punti di vista. I risultati della ricerca mirano a fornire preziose informazioni sulla circolazione e sull’impatto dei progetti infrastrutturali di Calatrava, contribuendo alla comprensione del loro ruolo nel modellare gli ambienti urbani.
