The widespread diffusion of image editing software has created the need for digital forensic techniques capable of blindly detecting the presence of image forgeries. This is particularly significant for scientific images, such as western blots. Indeed, the diffusion of manipulated images in scientific publications may lead to severe consequences. In this paper, we focus on one specific type of image manipulation: gamma correction. In particular, we propose an algorithm that estimates the amount of gamma correction that has been applied to a western blot image through the use of various machine-learning techniques. Our method relies on the presence of specific manipulation artifacts in the pixel value histogram. Multiclass classification models as well as regression models are employed to produce the estimated gamma value. Experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method in multiple scenarios.

Abstract
Experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method in multiple scenarios.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
