The Milan Central Station is a completely peculiar example of an outskirt in the city centre: despite being possibly the best connected point of the entire urban infrastructure system, it is still only a point of passage for those arriving in the city or leaving. This project was born from the desire to take advantage of the network of connections and services surrounding the Central Station to finally make it a destination, both for those who visit Milan and for those who live there. This goal is achievable thanks to the enormous mass of Connected Warehouses, a vital resource in a city so hungry for free, flexible - and fascinating - spaces. In fact, along both sides of the railway embankment a series of 126 vaulted warehouses runs along 1820 meters of road. Only 13 of the 126 spaces are currently active, but the city has recently begun to acknowledge this resource, as demonstra- ted by Dropcity, an initiative linked to the Fuorisalone which for 9 days occupies 15 warehouses with unique and innovative exhibition projects. This phenomenon has revealed the infinite potential of this monumental resource, generating the idea of expanding reuse to the entire system. Fundamental was the immediate adherence to a pragmatic and direct approach, aimed at exploiting the spaces as they pre- sent themselves without wasting time on architectural interventions as ends in themselves. A study of the events that animate the city during the year has given birth to a literal program of resuscitation of the embankment through minimal interventions limited to preparing all the spaces for an infinite number of possible functions through a series of repeated modular archi- tectural elements in different variations and adapted along the series of identical warehouse spaces. Nervous system of the entire system is the transposition of the program into a software device that makes the use and parti- cipation in the warehouse complex intuitive and innovative, both by large entities in the Milan area and by smaller companies and multidisciplinary initiatives, up to reach private individuals who need spaces in the heart of the city.
La Stazione Centrale di Milano è un esempio del tutto peculiare di periferia in centro città: pur essendo possibilmente il punto meglio collegato di tutto il sistema infrastrutturale urbano, è tutt’ora solamente un punto di passaggio per chi arriva in città o se ne va. Questo progetto nasce dalla volontà di approfittare della rete di collegamenti e servizi che circondano la Stazione Centrale per renderla finalmente una destinazione, sia per chi visita Milano che per chi ci vive. Tale obiettivo è raggiungibile grazie all’enorme massa dei magazzini raccordati, una risorsa vitale in una città così affamata di spazi liberi, flessibili – e affascinanti. Lungo entrambi i lati del rilevato ferroviario infatti una serie di 126 magazzini voltati co- steggia ben 1820 metri di strada. Attualmente sono attivi solo 13 dei 126 spazi, ma la città ha recentemente cominciato ad accorgersi di questa risorsa, come dimostra Dropcity, iniziativa collegata al Fuorisalone che per 9 giorni occupa 15 magazzini con progetti espositivi unici e innovativi. Questo fenomeno ha svelato le infinite potenzialità di questa monumentale risorsa, generando l’idea di espandere il riutilizzo all’intero sistema. Fondamentale è stata l’adesione fin da subito a un approccio pragmatico e diretto, volto a sfruttare gli spazi per come si pre- sentano senza perdere tempo in interventi architettonici fini a se stessi. Uno studio degli eventi che animano la città nel corso dell’anno ha dato vita a un vero e proprio programma di rianimazione del rilevato tramite interventi minimi limitati a predispor- re tutti gli spazi ad un’infinità di funzioni possibili tramite una serie di elementi architettonici modulari ripetuti in diverse varia- zioni e adattati lungo la serie di spazi identici dei magazzini. Sistema nervoso di tutto il sistema è la trasposizione del programma in un apparato software che rende l’utilizzo e la parteci- pazione al complesso dei magazzini intuitiva ed innovativa, sia da parte di grandi entità del territorio milanese che per imprese minori e iniziative multidisciplinari, fino ad arrivare a privati che hanno bisogno di spazi nel cuore della città.
