This study examines the societal and familial pressures faced by Chinese mothers in the context of breastfeeding, highlighting a significant lack of support in various aspects. Despite the global promotion of breastfeeding for its nutritional benefits, Chinese mothers often encounter challenges due to insufficient societal support. The research focuses on family dynamics as a starting point for improvement, given the direct influence and potential support family members can provide. The investigation was primarily conducted through an analysis of posts and comments on the Chinese social media platform RED (小红书), offering insights into the real-life experiences and stories of mothers during the child-feeding process. This approach provided a window into the personal struggles and societal pressures encountered by these women. Additionally, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to systematically understand infant-feeding practices and family culture in China. The findings reveal that while societal expectations heavily influence infant-feeding decisions, the immediate family, especially elders and partners, play a crucial role due to their close relationship with the mother. In response, this study proposes the creation of a website designed to offer unbiased, scientific information about various infant feeding options. This platform aims to educate not only new parents but also their family members, facilitating a more supportive environment for mothers. By offering a holistic view of feeding choices and promoting informed decision-making, the website seeks to empower mothers to choose the best feeding methods for their children, with the support of their partners and family. This research underscores the need for accessible, science-based information in the realm of infant nutrition, advocating for a supportive network that respects and aids mothers’ autonomy in feeding decisions.
