Milan has shaped valuable tangible and intangible heritage in its long history of urban agriculture. However, intensified industrialization and urbanization since the 20th century pose risks of destruction or disappearance to many agricultural heritage originally located on the city's fringe. In the process of heritage conservation, both top-down policies from the Municipality and bottom-up initiatives from associations have played crucial roles, creating successful cases of agricultural parks in Milan. This study focuses on the urban agricultural heritage in Milan's Ticinello Agricultural Park, particularly the farmhouses and their surrounding areas, analyzing them from various perspectives such as landscape, history, and ecology. Through landscape system historical analysis, the research examines land-use changes in the study area over three centuries, identifying enduring imprints of agricultural landscapes. In-depth exploration of residents' spiritual and social connections with agricultural landscapes is conducted through the analysis of past and present social perceptions. Additionally, a comprehensive survey of existing plant species reveals significant threats from invasive species. The study further explores bio-cultural heritage and the hydrological heritage of fountains that once existed in the study area. Quantitative analyses are conducted on four ecosystem services: food production, carbon storage, habitat quality, and cultural services. The findings emphasize the potential to enhance local food production for improved food security, the importance of introducing more trees for enhanced carbon sequestration, and the dual nature of areas with higher habitat quality facing degradation and providing rich cultural ecosystem services. Correlation analysis highlights synergies between specific ecosystem services and their relationship with historical land division. Finally, adopting the perspective of “heritage as the main driver”, landscape planning and design for the study area aim to reshape the heritage value of urban agriculture by reintroducing farming traditions that incorporate innovations, providing education for residents and future generations, and offering diverse ecosystem services.
