This work researches the complexities of dissonant heritage within the Balkan Peninsula, focusing on its implications for regional identity and memory politics. The study critically examines the preservation, interpretation, and integration strategies of heritage sites associated with 20th-century totalitarian regimes, arguing for a context-sensitive approach that acknowledges the varying narratives and associations these sites embody. Through a comprehensive analysis of various stakeholders’ perspectives, this work investigates the complexities of engaging with dissonant heritage in a post-conflict landscape, emphasizing the need for comprehensive and educational methodologies to foster a shared understanding of the past. It proposes innovative frameworks for managing dissonant heritage that enhance societal cohesion and promote historical awareness. By highlighting the potential of dissonant heritage to act as a catalyst for dialogue, reconciliation, and peace-building in the Balkans, this publication is meant to contribute to the discourse on heritage studies, offering insights for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners involved in heritage conservation and cultural diplomacy.
